The latest round of fearmongering and propaganda against the Syrian government is now dovetailing with the latest round of fearmongering and propaganda against North Korea. It seems the corporate media and the Western governments for which it speaks have now decided to go for a two-fer when drumming up justifications for more war in Syria and a new war with North Korea.
This time, the narrative is that North Korea is shipping chemical weapons and other types of weaponry to Syria in violation of Western dictates.
One report by CNBC read,
Two North Korean shipments to a Syrian government agency responsible for the country's chemical weapons program were intercepted in the past six months, according to a confidential United Nations report on North Korea sanctions violations.
The report by a panel of independent U.N. experts, which was submitted to the U.N. Security Council earlier this month and seen by Reuters on Monday, gave no details on when or where the interdictions occurred or what the shipments contained.
"The panel is investigating reported prohibited chemical, ballistic missile and conventional arms cooperation between Syria and the DPRK (North Korea)," the experts wrote in the 37-page report.
"Two member states interdicted shipments destined for Syria. Another Member state informed the panel that it had reasons to believe that the goods were part of a KOMID contract with Syria," according to the report.
KOMID is the Korea Mining Development Trading Corporation. It was blacklisted by the Security Council in 2009 and described as Pyongyang's key arms dealer and exporter of equipment related to ballistic missiles and conventional weapons. In March 2016 the council also blacklisted two KOMID representatives in Syria.
"The consignees were Syrian entities designated by the European Union and the United States as front companies for Syria's Scientific Studies and Research Centre (SSRC), a Syrian entity identified by the Panel as cooperating with KOMID in previous prohibited item transfers," the U.N. experts wrote.
SSRC has overseen the country's chemical weapons program since the 1970s.Neither the Syrian nor North Korean governments have responded to the allegations.
The U.N. experts said activities between Syria and North Korea they were investigating included cooperation on Syrian Scud missile programs and maintenance and repair of Syrian surface-to-air missiles air defense systems.
Yet while the western corporate press goes crazy over the reports, suggesting that North Korea – at times presented as a backward no man’s land and at other times presented as the technologically advanced center of all threats to the world – is shipping chemical weapons to Syria which Syria will then use to massacre civilians for absolutely no reason, the facts to prove the allegations are rather sparse.
Despite media outlets’ representation of the report as a “U.N. report,” meaning a U.N. statement, the report was compiled by “independent U.N. experts” and provided by them to the U.N. Security Council. The only U.N. statement that has come as a result of the report is that the United Nations is investigating these claims.
The actual claims themselves, however, were made by two “U.N. member states” who are not named but who could probably be identified if you look hard enough. The report reveals that two shipments coming from North Korea were intercepted by these two “member states” but does not reveal that the shipments contained chemical weapons. In fact, it doesn’t mention what the shipments contained or even where they were interdicted. Allegations are being made that, since the shipment was headed for the Syrian Scientific Studies and Research Centre. The shipment was supposedly coming from the Korean Mining Development Trading Company.
The KOMID was blackballed by the U.N. Security Council, acting as world government bureaucrats, eight years ago and United States and the EU have labeled the SSSRC as a cover organization for Syria’s chemical weapons program.
Of course, the United States and its allies in the war against Syria as well as the corporate media mouthpieces that simply repeated the words of the CIA and the State Department have no shortage of conspiracy theories as to what companies are “fronts” for when it comes to countries they want to destabilize and destroy.
Despite the corporate press being essentially united in the tone of their reporting, doing everything in their power to convince Americans that Syria and North Korea are secretly cooperating to build up Syria’s chemical weapons program, there simply isn’t evidence to support any of these claims. That won’t stop the corporate media and the NATO alliance against sovereignty and independence, however. Unfortunately, the American people can expect more hysteria over the coming weeks as the imperialist machine shows no signs of abating.
