For years Kris Kristofferson was told he was suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease and would simply have to get used to a failing memory that would only continue to get worse.
Kristofferson had been having trouble with his short-term memory for quite some time and even had problems recounting the past, losing his grasp on memories that even many of his fans could recall, having read biographies and watched documentaries about his life.
Even Kristofferson himself wondered how he was able to continue performing but somehow the songs remained in his mind. But at the age of 79, Kristofferson discovered that he was misdiagnosed and that it was neither Alzheimer’s nor dementia that was causing problems with his memory – it was Lyme disease.
Kristofferson tested positive for the illness earlier this year and the results have led to a completely different form of treatment that has seen a dramatic improvement in his condition. “He was taking all these medications for things he doesn’t have, and they all have side effects,” says his wife Lisa.
But after three weeks of Lyme disease treatment and abstinence from the Alzheimer’s and depression pills prescribed by the doctors who misdiagnosed him, Kristofferson has exhibited a shocking level of improvement. “All of a sudden he was back,” Lisa says. Although there are still some bad days “some days he is perfectly normal and it’s easy to forget that he is even battling anything.”
Unfortunately, it is not clear what Kristofferson’s treatment actually is but we hope that it is made public so that others who are suffering with Lyme might be able to consider it themselves. The medical establishment is not entirely in agreement as to how to test for and treat Lyme disease or even what to call the chronic form of the illness. Many, however, believe that Lyme is not only undertreated but underdiagnosed and unfortunately many medical doctors tend to ignore patients’ complaints that may point to Lyme.
Regardless, Kristofferson’s story is yet another example of just how common and debilitating Lyme can be as well as the fact that there is indeed hope for those who have it. At the age of 80, Kristofferson is finishing up a tour with Willie Nelson and will soon head to Scandinavia for a series of dates there.
