According to reports by Lebanese, Iranian, and Israeli media, the Russian Air Force recently intercepted Israeli aircraft flying over Lebanon near the Syrian border. The reports coming from these news sources claim that the Russians informed the Israelis that they were approaching Russian-controlled airspace and that they would be shot down if they did not change course. The Israelis complied.
The Israeli planes were apparently flying over the Akkar region of northern Lebanon.
Iranian media has reported that the Israeli mission was to spy on Russian ships currently docked at the port of Tartus in Syria.
The Iranian outlet, al-Alam, also reported that the Israelis were attempting to spy on Russian planes flying out of the Latakia air base and to determine whether or not the Russians are providing arms to Hezbollah.
Although in September the Russians and the Israelis reached an agreement regarding the airspace over Syria so as not to experience any unintended clashes between the two air forces, the Israelis have still poked and prodded at the outskirts of Russian-controlled air space on a number of occasions, prompting the Russians to respond by ordering them out of the area.

After decades of having their run of the place, it seems that the Israelis are finally being told to stay in their own sandbox, even if the sandbox does belong to someone else.
While it is no doubt a positive step to see the Israelis forced to act in a civilized manner, a direct military confrontation between Israel and Russia would no doubt be both a dangerous escalation in the Syrian conflict and the tensions between Russia and the United States.

Russia’s defense ministry said Thursday that its forces in Syria had set up a “hotline” with Israel’s military to avoid clashes in the sky over the war-torn country.
An “information-sharing” mechanism “has been established through a hotline between the Russian aviation command center at the Hmeimim air base (in Syria) and a command post of the Israeli air force,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that the two sides were undergoing training on how to cooperate.
According to As Safir, the Lebanese source said that Russian aircraft immediately blocked the Israeli jets’ path while they flew above the Akkar region in northern Lebanon. “The Russians immediately sent a clear warning to the Israelis that entering Syrian airspace would be a pretext for opening fire,” the source added.
According to the paper, which is considered loyal to Hezbollah, the Israeli aircraft quickly heeded the warnings and changed their course.
