7.5 Earthquake in Papua New Guinea

Fresh on the heels of a large earthquake in Mexico City, Mexico on Friday, April 18, 2014, Reuters is reporting that a 7.5 quake has struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea on Saturday.

Although there were no initial reports of damage or death, it is quite clear that the strength of the quake was significant simply by virtue of its magnitude.

A tsunami warning was issued for the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea but that warning was lifted shortly thereafter. It appears that there is no longer any tsunami-related threat.

Experts, of course, cannot rule out another large earthquake following this one due to their unpredictable nature.

As Jonathan Bathgate, a seismologist at Geoscience Australia stated to Reuters, "Certainly it has been very active, more active than usual. (The spate of earthquakes) is relieving some pressure on this faultline, but we can't rule out another large earthquake."

In the week leading up to the quake, a series of strong tremors have been felt near Bourganville, including a 7.3 on April 11.

Considering the undoubted increase in earthquakes of serious magnitude all across the world in the last few years, particularly the last few months, many people are becoming concerned that these increased tremors in areas such as Yellowstone could be the foretelling of a coming a cataclysmic seismological event.

Others, however, contend that these events are simply natural occurrences.

This earthquake is now one of a string of many earthquakes that have taken place over the last few weeks in addition to the awakening and eruption of several volcanoes.
